Newbie PC builder here, what mistakes to avoid?

so I'm about to dive into building my first PC and I'm feeling a mix of excitement and dread. i've watched countless YouTube tutorials and read a bunch of guides, but I'm still worried about making rookie mistakes. my biggest concern is accidentally damaging a component during installation or not getting the right parts to work together. i've heard horror stories about people forcing RAM sticks into slots the wrong way or mixing up power cables...

i definitely don't want to fry anything on day one! while researching, I found some folks saying to double check compatibility between the motherboard and CPU, and to watch out for static electricity when handling components. some suggest taking extra care with the thermal paste application on the CPU cooler too much or too little can apparently be a problem.

i also read about the importance of updating BIOS if needed, but I'm a bit nervous about messing with that. have any of you experienced these issues, and how did you deal with them? aside from these, are there any other common pitfalls I should be aware of before jumping in? planning to start building next weekend, so any advice would be really appreciated. thanks a lot!
 
i get the worry about compatibility, but isn't it easier to just check the part list on PCPartPicker? and for the BIOS, you might wanna wait till you get the build running before messing
